Spark Catchers by Lemn Sissay →
Created for a permanent poetry installation on the Olympic Park, ‘Spark Catchers’ is Lemn Sissay’s poem celebrating the pioneering industrial action of the women and girls at the Bryant and May match factory in Bow, East London. In 1888 they went on the first un-unionised strike against poor working conditions, which helped spark a social revolution changing working conditions...

A good article by Lisa Katayama for Wired on creator of the infamous 2channel and partner in the hugely popular Niconicodouga video site which allows users to write comments on top uploaded videos. Nicely illustrated with videos showing examples of the stuff mentioned in the article.

You could - and I probably will - spend hours playing with this free online font generator. Like all the most malicious time sinks, it’s easy to convince yourself that you are doing something productive.

Following their attempt to get to the bottom of “What’s with all the concrete facades?” in part two in their Ask An Architect Neojaponisme goes part way in answering the question “Where’s the insulation?” We’ve just moved into an old Japanese house made of wood, dirt and straw and know full well that mikan oragnges in our genkan will be more likley to get...

The Logic of Life
Cycling around in the rain, I’ve been catching up on my podcasts. One of the many excellent (and free) podcasts offered by the BBC is Start The Week, and last night I listened to an excellent edition that featured a great interview with novelist Peter Carey on his latest book His Illegal Self. The bit that really caught my attention, however, was on a book called The Logic Of Life by...

Hug A Speaker
Tomorrow I’m DJing with the mighty windcheater at Hug A Speaker at MUGEN 5160. It’s a pre-holiday night, so if you fancy a bit of reggae, dub, breakbeat and dubstep, feel free. There’s no charge and women get their second refreshing beverage gratis. The other DJs - Filter Kings, Jah Love Is Sweeter and Doikle - will be playing reggae, but windcheater and I will be going more...
Lhasa unrest
Boing Boing has a good round up of links relating to the current unrest in Lhasa and updates on the flow of information in and out of Tibet. They include a link to a site posting translations of microblog posts by Chinese netizens on sites similar to Twitter. Here is one entry What you are destroying is the very place that you live in. Aren’t you followers of the Living Buddha? You think...
Blue Monday, two and a half decades old!
Still outstanding after all these years. Can’t believe I gave my original copy, bought on the day of it’s release, to a now long ex-girlfriend. If I hadn’t, I could put it here.
Freesound
Perhaps because I have very little original talent of my own, I’m a big supporter of the Free Culture movement and associated organisation Creative Commons. I just came across the excellent Freesound project via the Creative Commons blog. It’s kind of like Flickr for sounds - not songs and music - and once you start pottering around on the site it can be just as dagerous a time sink...

Tired of the well ploughed Engrish vein MetaのTame has started a new, more positive, quest for “examples of brilliant cross-linguistic creation”. They start with Shibuya store “Frank Zakka”. Click the title of this post to check out the original post.

Nordstrom mania and Japan T-shirts
I was in Honolulu for the opening of a new Nordstrom store at the Ala Moana shopping mall last week. There was a huge build up in the local media the couple of weeks prior to the opening, and, on opening day, the place was packed. While I picked up a couple of snazzy hats - psyched that for once they had my size and didn’t have to buy in the kids’ section - I notice some of the...

Beautiful and scary hornet's nest
While we are away builders are working on our new old house. When they removed the ceiling they found, not only that the roof is in pretty good condition, but a huge hornet’s nest. We’d love to keep our house guests but…

Barack Obama won the Hawaii Democratic primary held here the other day by a landslide. Caucus sites ran out of Democratic Party registration forms and ballot papers. Many people voted for the first time, but although some said they felt compelled to go out and vote as they felt the Hawaii vote might actually mean something this time round you can’t help feeling that the real reason for the...
I wasn’t too excited about running 8 miles through some of Oahu’s least scenic areas , when I could save 45USD and go for a nice run on a gorgeous trail (and not have to get up at 4:30am). The run was a pleasant surprise, however. Getting up at 4:30am was horrible, but the event was actually a lot of fun. I shot video as a way to stop my poorly trained self from getting carried away...
David Beckham in Hawaii
After last weekend’s Great Aloha Run (video coming soon) we picked up a flyer from a guy outside Aloha Stadium advertsing the Pan-Pacific Soccer Champs to be held over the next few days. The four team tournament features two US teams, a Japanese team, and an Austrailian team. The final is on Saturday night, but as it’s just down the road from where we are staying we might take Felix...
